Y-3: brave samurai in the sports world
Result of cooperation between high fashion and an iconic sportswear brand
Long-term and fruitful tie-up between a famous designer Yohji Yamamoto and spotswear brand adidas began with a simple request in the fashion world. The designer asked the brand for sneakers for the launch of his 2000 Fall/Winter collection. During talks they came up with idea of teaming up for a joint collection. It was a bold one because the high fashion brands had never cooperated with the sports ones before. Tie-up was called Y-3 where “Y” stands for designer’s name (Yohji Yamamoto) and “3” stands for the adidas symbol – 3 stripes.
The first Y-3’s runway show was in Paris in 2002. The result met both companies’ expectations: not only journalists and experts praised the collection but customers liked it also. Then the decision was taken – to found a separate brand becoming a fashion brunch of adidas. The first Y-3 monobrand store was opened in Tokyo in 2004. Afterwards a new brand opened its stores worldwide.
Yohji Yamamoto managed to create unique authentic style: each item looks like future samurai outfit. Designer’s hand is seen in every collection: traditional Japanese patterns, difficult cut out, relaxed fit, black and white colours. Yamamoto mixes all these with technical sports fabrics and flash lights putting three stripes signature on it. The collections are about traditions, fast-pace lifestyle in metropolis and looking ahead. Every season Y-3 is a unique and expected show of not only clothing but also both brands’ philosophy.
Today Y-3 men’s and women’s line consists of not only sportswear but casual clothing: blazers, dresses, leather jackets, high-heeled shoes. Brand also has a separate sport line.
