THE NORTH FACE: 50 YEARS OF RESEARCH
Article is about The North Face producing the widest range of clothes for extreme sports and everyday life
For 50 years The North Face managed to not only make life of million tourists easier but also become one of the leading street brands via regular and successful collaborations with Supreme and Vans. Such things happen rarely that’s why The North Face history is quite curious.
Ironically, but the history of the company takes its roots in quite warm coast of San-Francisco. In this very place the idea of making hobby the meaning of life came into Douglas Tompkins’ head who was an avid traveller when he opened the climbing equipment store in 1966.
It became popular due to the luxurious party with famous rock band The Grateful Dead and constantly extended the range of products. Within the time the brand name The North Face was made up reflecting the meaning of the coldest and hardest for climbing side of a mountain.
Nevertheless, the official date of The North Face foundation was 1968. In this year the store was sold to the Stanford graduate Kenneth "Hap" Klopp who was looking for a start-up. At that moment sales were growing but producers sometimes couldn’t keep up with increasing consumer requirements. This very fact inspired Klopp to launch his own clothes line. At the beginning of his business the factory was located in the store backyard but even at that time in 1969 the first innovative product was created – backpack “Ruthsack” with reimagined design making it much lighter than others.
Thirst for development
The North Face almost from the very beginning worked with extreme sport lovers who were not afraid to come face-to-face with nature. Annual sponsored expeditions helped with the new product updates being an amazing PR campaign. “Never Stop Exploring” – is nowadays slogan supporting the travellers who decided to explore new lands. It is not just a slogan but even a creed meaning the company’s attitude to the product.
The North Face never stops its research and that’s why many innovations appeared. It is hard to imagine todays camping without them. There are the oval tents developed by Richard Fuller, the membrane material GORE-TEX and jackets made of it, the collection of light-weight clothes Tekware and many other technological inventions. And now picture this – all these achievements combined with the modern style.
Except the collaborations with the popular street brands as Supreme which were mentioned before The North Face has a wide range of its own design. For example, The Black Label collection launched exclusively in Europe is a fresh reintroducing of the legendary silhouettes. The inherent protection from bad weather is mixed with updated fabrics and fresh colourings which perfectly fit in cloak-room of the urban citizen.
