PUMA x BAPE
Proper combination of the iconic camo print from the Japanese studio with the laconic design from the global sports brand: meet the joint capsule collection.
«I have always been most excited about seeing my clothes on the street»
Globally famous sports brand PUMA has announced its partnership with Japanese streetwear brand BAPE, also known as «A Bathing Ape». BAPE’s iconic camouflage print has joined minimalistic PUMA’s design in the capsule clothing and footwear collection. The collaboration features a fusion of sports and subculture combining classic restrained German style and recognizable aesthetics from Tokyo. We’re hap-py to announce that the collection will be available at Brandshop. Moreover, we ea-gerly want to share our joy of the arrived collection with you, and at that point we decided to hold a party at our store at Petrovsky Boulevard, 21. But first let us tell you about the collection!
BAPE is a Japanese brand founded by Tomoaki Nagao (Nigo) in 1993. It’s worth to know something about this extraordinary personality. From the very childhood Tamaoki was interested in the United States’ culture, especially in hip-hop and North American way of life. After studying fashion editing at college, he worked as volun-teer for the well-known Popeye magazine, and after that Nigo decided to launch his own streetwear brand. The grand opening of the first store called «Nowhere», located in popular for Tokyo trendies Harajuku district, happened in 1993.
As of today
So where has the name BAPE and all its further branding begun from? It’s very sim-ple. One day Tomoaki saw the 1968 classic movie «Planet of the Apes», which in-spired him for the well-known style and logo. «Bathing» is the reference to the Japa-nese idiom saying «Bathing Ape in lukewarm water» which means the desire of youth to own all the fashionable things. Nigo personally managed the sale of his clothes and distributed it among his friends, so that he reached the success and popu-larity. That’s how talented Japanese guy made words about him go round beyond Asian borders. Hip-hop icons such as Pharrell Williams, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and many other trendsetters appeared in public in Nigo’s brand clothes.
The combination of two polar views
In PUMA x BAPE collection Japanese brand’s aesthetics is combined with clothing and footwear style of the German manufacturer. The original R698 sneakers and Disc Blaze have been given a distinctive re-fresh with aggressive black and green camou-flage print. This time BAPE muted the riot of colors of Blaze of Glory, a model fa-mous for its’ extraordinary combination of materials and colors and gave preference to white color. The football culture inspired the PUMA x BAPE capsule collection, too. For example, the collection presents football equipment, consisting of camo T-shirts and training shorts with FC BAPE logo and reflective inserts. Moreover, the collection has classic sport suits PUMA T7, T-shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts in-spired by training process and warm long jacket inspired by those jackets of the best coaches of nowadays. PUMA has the right approach to its lookbook also, involving in the shooting a powerful Italian striker Mario Balotelli, who creeps the opponent’s defense with just a glance.
