Porter - Yoshida & Co: dedication to work for over than half a century
Getting familiar with the remarkable history of Japanese brand Porter-Yoshida & Co
Designs made for paper tags (1962—1968)
Facts from the life of Founder
Porter is the main brand of Japanese corporate Yoshida & Co, founded by Mr. Kichizo Yoshida in 1962. The brand won renown early on as a manufacturer of high quality bags and accessories being totally committed to “Made in Japan” principle and following its motto “Heart and soul into every stitch”. What is remarkable about the life of Mr. Yoshida is the fact back from 1981 – this very year he was selected to the member of New York Designers’ Collective, becoming the first Japanese to be conferred such a high status. By the way, the manufactory of Yoshida corporate has been in business since 1935, and in view of this, Kichizo Yoshida was preparing pretty thoroughly to the launch of the Porter brand.
It is well known that Japanese are a very devoted nation, and the idea of the lifetime employment at the same enterprise is passed on from generation to generation. Many Porter-Yoshida employees also share this view. “Manufacturing goods of high quality leather is not just a fancy, but our genuine desire, our destiny, if you wish” – says Shoichi Inose, whose family is processing leather for Porter-Yoshida Co. use for more than 50 years. And this case is not the only one on the factory floor. Bag craftman Teruo Sekiguchi, for example, has been working for the company for 42 years by now. It seems that this very approach enables the Porter-Yoshida Co. brand to hold leading positions not only at the Asian market, but at the international one as well.
The story by Akira Kurosawa
The brand owes its popularity not only to the employees’ devotion or high quality manufacturing, but also to the film by Akira Kurosawa, “High and Low”. The main character is a wealthy manufacturer who carries money and papers in the Porter bag. The film was awarded at the Venice Film Festival, thus forestalling the boom of Japanese culture in Europe.
Materials and design
Hasegawa-Kuwahata designers duet has been constantly working on Porter-Yoshida accessories delivery since 1980-s. Their method of working is still the same as it used to be: they draw sketches on plain paper trying to minimize the influence of computer technologies on the collections. A distinguishing feature of their approach is that they seek to pick the final design based upon the materials the company has at its disposal. As a result, every next collection is notable for a special exploring approach. The choice of materials used for Porter-Yoshida Co collections is quite a local story. Soon after the war Japanese learned to deal with materials shortage, and up to date, all the details used for Porter bags and backpacks are produced in Japan.
