Patagonia: the outdoor legend
History of the legendary outdoor brand which gained fame amongst fans of active rest and conservationists
We talk about the true legend of outdoor clothing. For almost half a century of its history, PATAGONIA has made itself respected among fans of outdoor activities along with pop stars, environmental activists, and international media. Patagonia is a truly legendary brand founded by Yvon Chouinard, a person as iconic as Steve Jobs or Richard Branson.
True rock climbing icon, Yvon was born in 1938. He dedicated his life to mountaineering and extreme sports, and spent it side by side with outdoor clothing and gear, alone with wild nature, be it mountains or ocean waves. Early in after establishing Chouinard Equipment, Ltd in 1957, Yvon manufactured climbing equipment for his treks, and for his friends as well. In 1970, Chouinard bought few rugby shirts in Scotland, and duly appreciated the comfort during the treks, as the collar of the shirt prevented rubbing and protected the neck from undesirable injuries the equipment could make. Three years later Patagonia brand was born. The name was chosen with the reason behind. Yvon Chouinard promotes the idea of creating the clothes one would feel comfortable anywhere in the world – both in harsh conditions of the Southern Andes and in Cape Horn, while the name would carry some kind of mystery like Shangri-la or Timbuktu. The logo of the company depicts the skyline of the Monte Fitz Roy located in Patagonia, on the southern border between Argentina and Chile.
Conquering the peak
Patagonia main product line was based on those very shirts with collars from Scotland, that later became the bestseller of the brand. The clothing line success led to Chouinard Equipment (known today as Black Diamond Equipment) being sold, and Yvon focusing solely on Patagonia clothing production. As time passed, the brand arose with the history, and together with the company its philosophy evolved, the philosophy of freedom and close unity with the wild, where managers have no offices, and employees can surf during working hours. Surfing, by the way, is one of Yvon’s favorite activities.
The principled man
Yvon Chouinard often says his philosophy cannot exist without strong principles and beliefs, thanks to which the company achieved the success: “…business can deliver food, cure illnesses, employ people and make our lives better. It can deliver benefits and remain profitable at the same time without losing its soul.” Patagonia unique character does not lie in quality and design alone, but in its environmental friendliness. Since 1996, the company has been using only organic cotton in clothes production. Yvon Chouinard noticed: “If you ever happen to visit cotton plantation, there’s no sign of life – no bugs, no insects, no weeds. only pollinating machines over your head. I said I had no intention to participate in it”.
Green industry conscience
For many years, Patagonia has helped environmental groups, and in 2002 Chouinard with his friends and soul mates established “One Percent for the Planet” movement. This movement regularly helps and supports environmental groups. Yvon Chouinard was called “green conscience” of outdoor industry therefore. It is important to note that Yvon together with his wife are still the only owners of the company. Up to now, he is at the forefront of models development spending much time in the design department without wasting it at the desk among the papers.
