New Balance: comfort in balance
For more than a hundred years of its history, New Balance has seen it all, both ups and downs. Today, we speak about them
The history of New Balance began more than a century ago in the Boston area, Massachusetts, in the northeast of the USA. Early on in 1906, the year of its establishment, the company was named New Balance Arch Support Company. As it is clear from the name, its founder William J. Riley produced arch supports and other accessories designed to improve shoe fit. William had worked as a waiter before that, spending much time on his feet. No wonder that they were worn out at the end of the shift because of uncomfortable shoes. William decided to solve this problem once and for all, while helping all the other people who spend most of the time up in duty bound.
EVERYTHING STARTED WITH A CHICKEN
The legend says that Riley came up with the name “New Balance” while observing chickens in the yard nearby. The balance those chickens had on their feet impressed him, so he decided to borrow this idea and implement it in his products. Inspired with the chicken foot structure, William created the first flexible arch support providing balance and comfort during long walks. In 1927, William hired Arthur Hall to be a salesperson who became his business partner and sales manager in 1934. From then onward, New Balance active promo-campaign across the USA took off.
SUCCESS IN SPORTS
The project of the first running spikes that Riley designed in 1938 specially for local runners club called Boston Brown Bag Harries made a great figure. The model’s success quickly spread around the US, and by 1941 New Balance had branched out to making shoes for running, baseball, basketball, tennis, and boxing. In 1953, Arthur Hall’s daughter together with her husband bought the company for 10k dollars marking a new round in the New Balance development. Under their leadership, the company kept on improving its sport shoes while achieving new goals.
COMFORT UP FRONT
The true revolution came along with New Balance releasing The Trackster model in 1960. The sneakers were the first running shoes in the world available in different widths. The model embodied all the latest company advances: ripple sole along with foot cushioning provided comfort during the whole run.
Despite all the achievements, the company marketing was weak, and all the key sales were made due to the word of mouth, or at the local sport fairs. In 1972, the situation changed dramatically as the actual chairman of New Balance, Jim Davis, bought the majority interest for 100k dollars. It is worthy of note that this happened on the day of Boston Marathon. Wasting no time, Jim decided to expand the customer base introducing new models. In the late 70s, in the heat of popularity of running, New Balance released the renowned 320 model. In 1976, the 320 garnered №1 ranking from the prestigious magazine Runner’s World for its comfort, arch support and cushioning.
New Balance has been always based in Boston, but the company can be called British as well. The British offshoot is located in coastal Flimby, in the northwest of England. For more than 30 years, about 28000 pairs are hand sewn there every week. Various colorways and models of New Balance are available at our store.
