Moleskine: the very notebook
The history of an italian brand Moleskine which name is commonly used nowadays
Moleskine was established as a brand in 1997 by the italian designer Maria Sebregondi. First of all she wanted to reintroduce the pattern of legendary notebook which was very popular among people of art and intelligent society of the last two centuries. Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway and Bruce Chatwin took reliable pocket fellows with them – the notebooks with waterproof black cover. There they kept their ideas, sketches, notes, even whole stories and impressions of them before becoming the famous artworks or classic of the world literature. Initially “moleskine” was the name of cotton fabric colored black. The word by word translation from English is “skin of mole”. Later this word gained another meaning – the notebook which cover is made of such material. It also meant that this notebook is an example of perfect quality with strong paper and cover firmly protecting its pages.
The birth of the idea
Long before the appearance of the brand the similar notebooks were produced in french city Tours. However, the family-run firm was closed in 1986. 11 years later Maria Sebregondi being a designer from Milan contacted italian company Modo & Modo to tell the story of the notebook and through mutual efforts bring to life all its fame. As a result of this cooperation the trademark Moleskine was registered and the company produced 5000 notebooks as its first output officially announcing themselves.
Beyond the borders
In 2004 Moleskine notebooks appeared in Japan spreading to the rest of Asia. 2006 was momentous for Moleskine. The company was purchased by the private equity firm Syntegra Capital. But the popularity grew incredibly fast and it was clear that the small staff of the company couldn’t meet the new challenges which demand required. In August 2006 the French investment fund Societe Generale Capital purchased Modo & Modo investing in its expansion therefore providing a fresh impetus for development.
Since 2007 Moleskine has extended the stationery range of premium quality. Except the notebooks with traditional black cover Moleskine produces these goods in various colors. There are also special editions and the notebooks for creative people who need to have it at hand. For example, the notebooks with musical staff were created for musicians, with storyboard – for film directors and journalists, etc.
Classics in design
Today Moleskine notebook is world-famous. It is not just a symbol of taste and style but it is also becoming a part of owner’s lifestory which he keeps in it. What is the difference between Moleskine and an ordinary notebook? The most important is in its classical design. The italian notebooks are created with convenient rounded corners and strong cover which protects paper from an external input while elastic band and sewn spine make the notebooks secure. There are also pages with perforation which allow tearing out them easily. Unlined paper with 70 g/m2 density perfectly retains color and sinks ink in. In other words, it is an ideal notebook.
