Malin+Goetz: natural cosmetics with sense of humour
Americans which found the golden mean between creative approach and business
Malin+Goetz founders – Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz both from NYC and both have absolutely different skin. Moreover, Matthew is the “lucky” one – it seems that he has all the skin diseases in the world. Going through tedious search of easy-to-use skincare for problem skin the colleagues decided to handle it on their own launching the cosmetics brand in 2004.
Being their own bosses
Two of them had enough experience to start the business. Malin had already built a career in Barneys, Prada and Kiehl’s. Seeing that Kiehl’s was purchased by an enormous corporation L’Oreal he began thinking about his own business where he would be his own boss. Former staff member of Swedish Vitra, Andrew Goetz was in favour of this idea.
But fancy package design or funny ideas are not a key to success. Content is. All Malin+Goetz formulations are developed by a couple of family-owned-and-operated apothecaries. Natural components mixed with cutting-edge technologies are the product basis. Gentle amino acid-based cleansing agents and hydrate provide a natural pH balance. The moisturizers are oil-free blending nourishing fatty acids instead of pore-clogging silicones and waxes. Moreover, there are also beneficial botanical extracts improving formulations. White package with mono-titles are divided by colours: blue is for face, green – for body, red – for hair. And yes, now when humanity consumes everything at hand we should say that this product is recommended to use both men and women. Matthew has a joke on that case: “Now you can always share cream or shampoo with your boyfriend”.
Realism in advertising
Malin and Goetz worked in their first store around the corner from their apartments in Chelsea. They took their two bulldogs to the work. The dogs in the windows attracted the customers by their funny look. Afterwards, Bob and Junior became more popular than their masters. The brand’s founders had to buy baby stroller specially for them because of their age. Recently, Mr. Greenberg, pug dog, became a new family member. Malin+Goetz official web-site has a special section “Product Hounds” where the dogs’ photos made by customers are posted. “That is the pleasure to run your own brand: you can do everything you want!” – Matthew explained.
