Lyle & Scott: the high flying bird
An article on Scottish brand Lyle & Scott which has now been existing for over one and a half centuries
The brand’s history comes along since 1874 when two brilliant tailors William Lyle and Walter Scott got an offer to create a uniform for the famous golf-club. They founded a knitwear company in Hawick, a small town hidden in the Scottish Borders, and took their last names as the name of the company. Since that time Lyle & Scott has made a huge step forward in design and technologies, but the company still follows the roots and heritage which go across the generations.
SUCCESS IN GOLF INDUSTRY
The company had been rewarded the title of the main clothing provider in Victorian Britain after it became famous for the clothes they made for golf fans from all over the world. Lyle & Scott became the highlight for all the big tournaments and many champions were giving preference to that brand. Over the years Lyle & Scott started being an essential part of the wardrobe for every good golf player.
Lyle & Scott became a respected name in international fashion overnight when it negotiated a partnership with Christian Dior in 1954 to produce joint branded cashmere. This was the first of many collaborations with luxury fashion houses & department stores including Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Liberty, Bergdorf Goodman and Michael Kors.
THE COLORFUL REVOLUTION
The brand recognition and individuality of Lyle & Scott started to form in the 60s when the brand became popular amongst eminent sportsmen and fabled people of that time. In the 80s the bright colours of Lyle & Scott's golfwear range were then adopted by and introduced to the main apparel range, bringing a more contemporary image for the brand. This helps Lyle & Scott to be featured in the "Casuals" youth movement which was bringing under the minds of lads from all over the Great Britain.
The now iconic Golden Eagle motif – is a Lyle & Scott's famous logo. The Eagle represents not only the brands reputation for reliability and quality but is also, of course, a golfing term for achieving two shots below par. This recognizable logo is on all the garments of the brand. Now, there are several clothing lines in Lyle & Scott, each of them has its own logo colour: Vintage range – yellow logo; Heritage – scarcely noticeable grey or red logo and green logo for sport Club range.
