Hackett: the British extract
Telling you about a brand that now is considered as British classics
«When customers ask me how old Hackett is, they are always surprised, believing that it was started by my Father or even Grandfather. They seem to think it has been around forever, and I like that» — says Jeremy Hackett, one of the brand’s founders.
From hobby to business
Jeremy Hackett met Ashley Lloyd-Jennings in 1979, with a shared love of second-hand traditional British men’s clothing. It is notable that it happened on Portobello Road — this street of London is known for its flea market and curiosity shop. A business partnership is soon started. The pair opened their first store selling fine quality second-hand traditional British clothing and accessories. They were welling up in style, so, as a result they started to grow financially. What is more, in 2007 Jeremy put out a book about traditional British style called “Mr. Classic”. But let’s recur to the formation of the brand.
Jeremy and Ashley opened their first store in 1983, but there were still only used clothes. So, they decided to manufacture from new, as the supply of second hand goods could not keep up with demand. Approached by two army officers looking for sponsorship, the Hackett Polo Team was formed and played out of Guards Polo Club. This marked the beginning of Hackett’s sportswear range when the team shirts proved so popular they were sold in store.
In 1988 Hackett started to advertise in a small way and adopts two devices, which prove to have longevity: the chequer board advertising style and the strap line “Essential British Kit”. International expansion began with the 1989 opening of a Spanish branch in Madrid a shop at the Rive Gauche in Paris in 1994. By the year 2007 Hackett had 29 stores in Europe and countries such as Japan, South Africa, Kuwait and others because of the following capital investment.
As of today, Hackett continues keeping up the status sponsoring tennis and polo teams. Evolution, new stores and new goals – that’s the way Hackett goes.
