G-SHOCK x Futura: wrist graffiti history
We talk about the latest G-SHOCK design reflecting the key moments in the history of Futura as an artist, and graffiti in whole
Continuing the series of collaborations with significant brands and creators, Casio G-SHOCK teams up with American street artist Futura and delivers their third limited design, G-SHOCK x Futura GD-X6900FTR-1ER. Preserving traditional Futura style, the timepiece features his iconic pattern based on a slightly chaotic vision of atom structure.
PIONEERING NEW STYLE
Leonard Hilton McGur, formerly known as Futura 2000, and simply Futura today, is a graphical designer, illustrator, and renowned street art old-stager. Beginning with illegal graffiti in New York subway in the 70s, he learned fast and gained fame as a pioneer of a more abstract graffiti structure. Unlike distinct and precise lettering every street artist then strived for, Futura used fine lines and rough drawings putting abstraction into street art. Exploring new territories, Futura designed vinyl covers, including those for The Clash, and in the 90s he started working with clothing brands most of which were only emerging then: Supreme, A Bathing Ape, Undercover. Nowadays, at the age of 60, he owns the Futura Laboratories brand and takes part in numerous side projects, G-SHOCK x Futura being one of them.
The history of the pattern used for the collaboration dates back to the days when the artist did not fully start his career. As Futura himself told, when being a teenager, he saw a bottle of floor protection agent Future Floor Wax by Johnson & Johnson in a supermarket. The future artist was impressed with the profundity of the 3D atom model used for the logo. Committing it to memory, he later made use of it in his works exploring the pattern potential and turning it into a true masterpiece.
Technologically, the timepiece meets all the traditions of G-SHOCK models: under the rule of “three 10s”, it withstands falling from 10 meters, pressure of 10 bar, and comes along with 10 year battery. Moreover, the watch is water resistant to 20ATM, which makes it suitable even for professional sailor, surfer, or diver, while case with Alpha-Gel cushioning technology provides movement safety. Other features include 2 multi-function alarms, 1 snooze alarm, 29 time zones, Super Illuminator flasher, countdown timer, stopwatch and so on.
