Eastpak: built to resist
History of a provocative brand of accessories that rushed headlong into lives of dynamic people
The Eastern Canvas Products brand, later shortened to the present name of Eastpak, was established in 1952 in Boston, one of the US textile industry capitals. Being a person of remarkable acumen, its founder Monte Goldman quickly understood that contracts with major customers would provide instant growth for the company. The very year Eastpak was founded, he had this contract – US Army took interest in hard-wearing duffels and backpacks to equip whole units. Moreover, Monte Goldman was the kind of person to make 30 years warranty for the product.
In 1976, Mark Goldman joined his father’s company. His innovative approach, along with the desire to refresh the products played the key role in Eastpak introduction to the major US malls. Mark put image aspect at stake. Apart from bags volume, utility and 30 years warranty, he brought in something else, design. Due to aggressive marketing policy and advertisements in numerous magazines, Eastpak gained widespread among active young people seeking to show off. Moreover, that is with Mark Goldman in charge when the company got its famous motto “Built to resist” thus capturing its military roots and the ability to survive any hardship.
