Donkey Kong in Brandshop
Enjoy another hit game from Nintendo, telling us about the rescue of a nice lady from paws of a huge gorilla.
HISTORY OF THE GAME
In 1976 the iconic movie «King Kong», remake of the classical film of year 1933, was out in cinemas. The plot is familiar to everyone: the gorilla found on the remote island far from civilization is taken to the city - to entertain the local audience. As a result, King Kong breaks free and kidnaps a pretty girl, and later on dies under bombardments of military aircraft. The Japanese game developer Shigeru Miyamoto was impressed by this movie and offered Hiroshi Yamauchi, the president of Nintendo corporation, to create a game based on the film. Yamauchi accepted the idea of Miyamoto and suggested that all slot machines with not that successful game ‘Radar Scope’ should be converted to a totally new arcade. This was the moment when work on Donkey Kong began. It took 5 years to prepare the game which gave birth to many new iconic video game characters.
The man in red and blue uniform, who got the name of Jumpman due to his ability to overcome the rolling barrels and fireballs, is moving on the stairs. The goal of Jumpman is to save the pretty lady from paws of the tossing gorilla, knowing no mercy. Apart from ‘King Kong’ scene, Miyamoto also gives references to ‘Beauty and the Beast and comics about Popeye the Sailor. By the way, there’s an interesting story related: the Nintendo company was trying to obtain a license to use the sailor’s character, but failed to do this. After great commercial success of Donkey Kong, the Paramount company asked Nintendo to use Popeye’s image in the game. It resulted in the launch of the ‘Popeye’ game in 1982.
