Cote&Ciel: Japanese minimalism and European easement
Ideas of freedom of movement between the urban and suburban space
Côte&Ciel designers develop and embody their own views on backpacks and tote bags since the year 2008 and constantly improve them. A few creative souls developed products that are as functional as they are stylish, that empower and support creative people. Côte&Ciel encapsulates the idea of freedom and the movement of people between urban and non-urban environments, with the concepts of practicality, progress and space into a single object. The brand balances sophisticated fabrication, technical expertise and ergonomic styling. Each object defines a new visual language inspired by architectural principles, the power of nature and the laws of gravity and human proportion.
Development of the brand
Long before the establishment of Côte&Ciel, Stephen Wembacher, student from Germany who was passionate about skateboarding, created his first collection of t-shirt prints for skaters. Shortly after that he began working closely with Apple on its accessories divisions and backed the fashion designer from Croatia Damir Doma who owns the Paris-based ready-to-wear brand. The cooperation with Apple and Damir Doma completely changed Stephen’s view on functionality and design. The accumulated experience allowed him to start his self-employment career.
The designer moved to Paris, assembled the team of a few creative minds and founded the company. The result is Côte&Ciel, a name meaning coast and sky and one that nods to the inspiration it takes from both the natural world and the French heritage. The vision for Côte&Ciel is simple: to develop, design and produce travel goods that balance modern fabrics with architectural shapes, to make sure bags, rucksacks and sleeves that complement our lifestyle. Every design thinks beyond pre-existing rules of construction. Every piece unlocks a new aesthetic, reflecting the lives of universally minded intrepid consumers and progressive urban nomads. Now, the team has grown and includes entrepreneurs, fashion, industrial, and graphic designers, and product engineers. Their experience spans creative industries including fashion, design and technology.
Everything is thought out
The company’s products are designed to fit smartphones, tablets, laptops and more. All so you can live life the way you need to, safe in the knowledge that your technology is protected with high quality, beautifully designed storage solutions. Inspired by the complementary clash between coast and sky, Côte&Ciel explores the concept of elemental collision by experimenting with ideas around rigidity and malleability, movement and stasis, tradition and innovation. These contrasting elements shape a creative confluence intended to challenge and broaden the possibilities of bag design. At Côte&Ciel they create goods designed to enable our journeys and exploration; bags and sleeves for men and women often with special protection for a range of media devices, each with an emphasis on fabric research focused on tactility and experimental design. Their output is architectural in the sense that it takes advantage of the collision of external forces and the tension between the wearer and the weight carried to realize its ultimate form. What is more, Côte&Ciel has also undertaken successful collaborations with influential brands such as Comme des Garçons, Mykita, Beams and Y’s by Yohji Yamamoto.
