CONVERSE: THE VERY FIRST SNEAKERS
This shoe is known by everyone around the world. Let us tell the history of the world-famous Converse chucks which became common
The Converse brand name is familiar to everyone. This American company has been producing shoes for more than 100 years while Chuck Taylor All Star became a real symbol of the XX century pop-culture, an essential item of modern man’s wardrobe. Marquis Mills Converse was a manager in Boston Rubber Shoe Company which produced and sold winter shoes. The history of these very chucks began in 1908 when Marquis established his own Converse Rubber Shoe Company. Initially he made winterized rubber soled shoe resembling crocs. The business was rather good but an incredible success was yet to come.
MEET CHUCK TAYLOR
A few years later the company’s range had athletic shoes for tennis. In 1917 the company launched the first basketball shoe – the legendary Converse All Star. It was a crucial moment for the whole shoe industry. Soon after this invention a famous basketball player Charles Hollis “Chuck” Taylor from the Akron Firestones Non-Skids started playing in the Converse All Star only. In response to such commitment in 1918 Converse began providing Taylor with his favorite sneakers.
In 1921 Chuck Taylor joined Converse officially. The company’s idea was about Chuck’s going on tour to promote the products. After that his trip he was called “Ambassador to Basketball”. In that time Taylor was associated with these very shoes. In recognition of his services to the company Taylor’s signature was added to the All-Star patch, high-topped sneakers. Since then these shoes are named after him – Chuck Taylor All Star.
FROM BLACK TO COLORS
During World War II, Converse extended the range making footwear and outfit for the military and agricultural industry. After the war the National Basketball Association (NBA) was founded. There many professional players wore Chuck Taylor All Star that became a tradition among them. Converse used to make sneakers in black but then customers wanted bright colors. Hearing this, the company started the production of sneakers in different colors reaching a new peak of success.
It may be said that this success was achieved due to the Hollywood celebrities. In the golden age of cinematography actors wore the comfortable Chuck Taylor All Star both in the movies and a real life. A famous in the 1950’s actor James Dean was among the first to show a new style in the photoshoot for the magazine in jeans and white Converse. This look is still in trend and admired by millions of people around the world.
