Baracuta: how to win Hollywood
Talking about a brand from England which clothing became the essentials of Elvis Presley, Steve McQueen, Frank Sinatra and others
The history of the Baracuta brand began in the city of Manchester – an industrial centre in the north-west England. In the XIX century this city was known as Cottonopolis, reaching its peak by 1912 when more than 8 yards of cotton per year were produced there. Manchester is also known for its regular rainfalls which provide high humidity level – it was perfect conditions for cotton spinning. All these factors led to appearing of many waterproof clothing productions and Baracuta was among them too.
An initial goal of the Miller brothers, John and Isaac, was raincoats production for the brands with a good reputation such as Burberry and Aquascutum. Gaining enough experience by the 1930’s John and Isaac decided to develop their own brand – Baracuta. The products line was extended by different raincoats marked by the code name of letter and number. But no one of them became so popular as the iconic G9 harrington.
Golf with a twist
Being the successful businessmen John and Isaac were members of the golf club and that’s why they needed a short comfortable jacket which could remain all the advantages of raincoats. So in 1937 the G9 model appeared where “G” stood for “Golf”. Another curious details of this harrington is tartan lining. The brothers were given permission by Lord Lovat, the Fraser Tartan chief (Simon Christopher Joseph) to use the Fraser Tartan pattern for the G9 lining. During WWII he proved himself as a brilliant soldier so G9 strengthened the association with the symbol of courage.
Across the ocean
After the war Isaac Miller started exporting to the USA where the G9 harrington gained popularity among golf lovers such as Bob Hope and Ronald Reagan. However, the model became iconic when it was introduced in Hollywood – Elvis Presley wore this jacket in the film “King Creole” in 1958 that made the Harrington an essential among other fancy clothing. In 1963 Steve McQueen appeared on the cover of Life magazine in the G9 – then it was not just the mods’ passing trend. After that the G9 jacket was worn by many musicians, actors and other celebrities – Baracuta was known by everyone.
The G9 entered the subculture since the 60’s. Especially it was fashionable among punks, skinheads and others. In the 90’s the frontmen of such bands as Blur and Oasis also wore this very jacket. Now you can see it on such actors as Jason Statham, Tom Hardy and Daniel Craig. It is a true authentic style icon which won its place then and now. Besides the G9 the Baracuta brand also sticks to its guns producing raincoats and parkas which were the first in its line.
