ASICS Gel Tanabata Pack: haiku of a forbidden love
One of the most intimate ASICS releases
This year, the Japanese designers reflect on the love. While the previous release in pastel shades accentuated those little things that make everyday routine brighter, this time the company reminds the world of the deepest and the most intimate. In honor of the traditional Tanabata festival, ASICS illustrate the Japanese legend telling of the power of mutual attraction.
Bushido steers us down a lifelong path
The Tanabata pack finds inspiration in the Japanese festival of the same name, also known as the Star Festival, celebrated every year on July 7. The festival builds on the story of beautiful Orihime, daughter of the Sky King, weaving the star cloth day and night. The wise father loved the cloth, yet he saw his daughter being sad, so he decided to smooth the solitude of hers. One day, he arranged for her to meet Hikoboshi, the cowherd, working at the coast of the Heavenly River, we call the Milky Way. The very moment Orihime and Hikoboshi met, they fell in love with each other, and married shortly after. Once married, they didn’t leave each other for a moment, and the weaving wheel covered with stardust, and the cows strayed all over Heaven. In anger, the Sky King forbade the lovers to see each other separating them across the Milky Way. Orihime was weaving the cloth again, while the cows were at the coast of the Heavenly River. Only Orihime was getting sad, her feet were aching, and her eyes were glazing. Moved, the King took pity on the lovers allowing them to meet again, yet only once a year – on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. The one thing to blight the meeting was the rain as the River broke its banks, and Orihime and Hikoboshi couldn’t meet each other. So they prayed for the weather to be fine on this very day. It is believed that if the lovers meet, then all the wishes and dreams of the people will come true. Still, all the living in the Land of the Rising Sun pray together with Orihime and Hikoboshi.
What does not kill us
The models within the Tanabata pack impersonate the beautiful lovers separated across the river by destiny, or by nature – across the two feet. Gel-Respector uppers of dark green leather feature close canvas panels, symbolizing the weaving artistry of Orihime, while midsole and outsole come in light olive color. Alternatively, Gel-Kayano incorporates smooth and hairy suede in mustard yellow which reminds us of the lonely cowherd Hikoboshi, and his cows. Both models come along with custom insoles: where Kayano receives the inscription of the Japanese for “Tanabata”, Respector has a stylized picture of the traditional Tanzaku streamers.
The separated lovers will reunite on July 16.
