Arc`teryx: evolution in action
Innovative approach and total loyalty - the main success factors for an outdoor brand of high level
The world-famous outdoor brand Arc`teryx was founded in the year 1989 in Vancouver, Canada by Dave Lane in his basement where he was making climbing harness. He was very dissatisfied with the quality of equipment from other manufacturers. So, he decided to completely change the world of climbing gear. Shortly after, Jeremy Guard, a local sportsman and a friend of Lane from the finance sector, joined as an equity partner. The company was originally named Rock Solid but then the name was changed to Arc`teryx in 1992. The name and logo of the brand refer to the Archaeopteryx Litographica which had been generally accepted by palaeontologists and popular reference books as the oldest known bird. The logo is based on the "Berlin specimen" of the bird, the most complete skeleton to date.
On the edge
There is no point to think that the company was successful from the very beginning and everything was easy. At the same time, founders couldn’t imagine that they had to organize the whole production line. They didn’t have enough experience to do that. Only using trial-and-error method they were able to introduce innovative technologies into mass production. What is more, there were periods of bankruptcy in the history of formation of the brand. But designers never lost hearts. So, the brand was gradually gaining a foothold on the market.
History of clothing
History of special-purposed Arc`teryx clothing for extreme sports started with a simple parka that Jeremy Guard bought while being at the bottom of the Rocky Mountains. Immediately he noticed a lot of drawbacks. After returning to Canada he started forming a creative team: the goal was to create a clothing line. In 1996, after obtaining a license from W. L. Gore & Associates for use of the Gore-Tex fabric, the company adapted it for its new line of outdoor technical apparel. Top selling items in that clothing line include the Theta AR and Gamma MX jackets. Over the years Arc`teryx designs have won a number of awards.
The company begins by challenging design assumptions. Solving problems from a clean page gives it the freedom to think beyond current materials and construction. Their timeless designs are intuitive, minimalist and human-centric, emphasizing function and simplicity. Here are some of the innovations that company made: anatomically shaped hip belts and back panels for backpacks, advanced composite construction packs, double glued stitches, WaterTigh Zippers, Alpha SV Gore-Tex jacket fabric, 3-dimentional curved zipper, laminated Hi-Loft liner and many others.
At ArcArc`teryx, the goal is to create equipment that enables a person to be immersed in the moment of doing, regardless of external conditions. Simple solutions to complex challenges; this is the essence of minimalism and company’s philosophy of design. Reducing the effects of weather, streamlining use, and moving efficiently creates a timeless, outdoor experience.
