Ally Capellino: beauty in details
Introduction to the history of the British brand which managed to turn over our understanding of comfortable everyday accessories
From the history of the brand
Ally Capellino is a British brand established in London in 1980. Its founders, designers Alison Lloyd and Jonathan Platt, met each other at the fashion department of the Middlesex University located in the north part of the capital. The company took its name from a misspelled Italian phrase “tiny hat”, symbolizing the nuanced approach to the bags, backpacks and accessories production that Ally Capellino takes.
Related to Russia
The year of 1980 was significant not only for the newly created company, but for the whole world as well. This very year, the XXII Summer Olympics were held in Moscow. Ally Capellino couldn’t keep out of the event releasing the line of T-shirts and accessories dedicated to the Olympics. The items were laced with unusual prints of Slavic patterns that Alison Lloyd picked from an old atlas in Russian. This collection turned out to make a starting point, bringing acclaim that every young company needs.
As early as in 1986, Ally Capellino took part in its first fashion week, and the most pleasant thing is that the company happened to make the runway show in London, brand’s home city, later becoming the frequent guest of the event. In 1988, Ally Capellino decided to open the shop in the fashionable district of Soho, and in 1992 the company signed the agreement with Coats Viyella, the largest textiles manufacturer in Great Britain. It was Coats Viyella that by all means assisted the brand in its promotion, and helped to approach the best department stores in the country. More to that, in 2006 Tate Modern gallery noted the brand regarding the bags collection as a piece of art, while in 2008 Apple credited the British company with production of accessories for its gadgets.
Apart from being a talented designer, Alison Lloyd is also an excellent businesswoman. Her acumen allowed the company to avoid the collapse of 1999 after her friend Jonathan Platt left Ally Capellino. Alison firmly believes that only thoughtful designer approach, along with complete independence from investors, helped the brand to keep its front going and to remain loyal to its values, while not giving in to the industry demands. Therefore, Ally Capellino is absolutely honest claiming it delivers the product the customer really needs.
The accessories are still designed by the company owner, being then manufactured at Ally Capellino own production facilities in London. All the production includes a lot of processes: from travelling across Italy and England in search of the textiles needed, to the individual control over every detail, performed by the managers. The collection of Ally Capellino accessories is available at Brandshop store. Come and have a look right now.
